15In April 1913, Tan Kheam Hock accompanied his younger sons Chong Chew and Chong Teck to London where they were âgoing to complete their educationâ (see âSocial and Personalâ Straits Times, 11 Apr 1913, at 8) but they had to return when their mother died while they were still on the way to London (see âSocial and Personalâ Straits Times, 5 May 1913, at 8). In 1914, he was admitted to the King Edward VII Medical School but it is not known if he graduated from the School (see âKing Edward VII Medical Schoolâ Straits Times, 30 May 1914, at 8).
16Tan Chong Chew (alias Chen Tsung Chou) was the third son of Tan Kheam Hock and Oh Peang Neo (âLocal Newsâ Weekly Sun, 28 Jan 1911, at 7) and younger brother of Tan Chong Khee and Tan Chong Lay, and elder brother of Tan Chong Teck. He married Foo Gim Yong, âthe accomplished daughter of Mr and Mrs Foo Boon Seah, of Penangâ at a lavish ceremony at the family residence at 30 Enggor Street (see âChinese Weddingâ Straits Times, 19 Jul 1915, at 10). He has been listed as having been Manager of the Eastern Mining and Rubber Co Ltd (see Straits Times, 23 Nov 1920, at 15); Manager of Liberty Hall Cinema (see Singapore Free Press, 11 Oct 1920, at 2); Director of the Malacca Pinda Rubber Estates Ltd (see âMalacca Pinda Estatesâ Straits Times, 31 Dec 1919, at 9).
